Fall. It’s my favorite time of year. The sound of leaves crunching under my feet as I walk. The smell of the crisp dry air. Spiced cider. Pumpkins and orange everywhere (my favorite color). I drink it all in, savoring each moment. And one of my kids’ favorite parts of fall is Halloween. This year Zoe decided to be a “winter fairy,” and Ashley a princess again. I may or may not wear my flapper costume, depending on how cold it is.
Because we don’t eat store-bought candy, the girls go trick-or-treating, then give it away to kids who come to our door after we get home. If there is something gluten and dairy free in their bag, then they have one piece. I buy the remaining candy from them for ten cents each, and the next day we go shopping for a toy.
One of our favorite things to make together on Halloween is Ginger & Chocolate Candy, and Cherry & Chocolate Candy. We’ve done other variations too, using different nuts and dried fruits. You can really be creative with your ingredients. We made these Raw Chocolate Raspberry Candies last Easter, but they could also be made for Halloween. They would be so cute in a basket with orange tissue paper or a fall colored cloth napkin 🙂
Also, I thought I would suggest some other yummy treats for Halloween by some of my favorite gals:
Elana’s Peppermint Patties
Elana’s Peppermint Patties
Ricki’s Raw Milky Way Bars, from The Daily Raw Cafe
Naomi’s Honey Toffee Lollipops
Lauren’s Mock “PayDay” Peanut Treats

Oh, you’ve made Halloween fun for me again! Can’t wait to try some of these old-time goodies this year and enjoy the “treat” of trick or treat again! But which one(s) to choose. . . ? They all look great!

What a great tip Kelly – I am definitely going to use the “I’ll buy the rest for 10cents each” tip. I think Callum who is 4 would totally go for it! Thanks so much and we’ll try out some of the recipes too!
Molly Painter says
Agave Almond Butter Popcorn Balls
3 cups Popcorn
2 tablespoons Chocolate Chips (grain sweetened)
3 tablespoons Agave Nectar
1/4 cup and 1 1/2 teaspoons Almond Butter
1/4 teaspoon Sea Salt
Mix popcorn and chocolate chips in a large mixing bowl. Heat agave nectar, almond butter and salt in a small saucepan over medium heat. Once syrup starts to get bubbly, continue to cook and stir constantly for another 30 seconds. Pour syrup over popcorn and mix until it sticks together. Let cool completely. When cooled, press into balls with your fingers. Store at room temperature.

Another friend suggested the 10cents per candy idea to me yesterday. My kids love it and have bought into it hook, line and sinker after having a 2 minute “why do I have to be gluten free, it’s so dull” outburst. Now they are exited about the prospect of the toy store. Hooray for gluten free Halloween tips! Thank you.

From now on, I am taking a “no-candy” approach to Halloween, instead taking the toy route as well. My boys are still a bit too young for the 10 cent each idea, but we will try that when it is age-appropiate.
I think buying a box of Matchbox cars, $1 books from Scholastic, or stickers would be just as fun for kids.
I did make a an allergy-free treat (although still high in sugar…alas) ghost pops filled with Yummy Earth lollipops.
