This photo of Zoe and Andy is a great example of the type of hair that works perfectly with “beach curls.” This is Zoe’s hair long and without layers. It’s how my hair looks when it’s long and without layers, but I couldn’t find a photo of my hair that way, so I’m using Zoe as an example π Side note: how cute are these two?! This was a year ago, when they traveled to Boulder, just the two of them.
And here is Zoe recently, with her friends all in costume at Hogsmeade. (Again: so adorable. What fun would this be if there weren’t any cuteness, right π ) This photo is an example of how Zoe’s hair (and mine) curls the shorter it is, and/or the more layered it is. Zoe cut her hair short and layered on her birthday last July, and she looks SO much older with it this way. And with her glasses too, which we found out she needed in September. I could just eat her up. π
Of course, diet also plays a big part in having beautiful hair. Avoiding refined sugar, drinking lots of purified water, eating lots of good fats, and getting plenty of gelatin and collagenΒ are all super important in keeping your skin, nails, and hair gorgeous. Read more about it HERE. But getting back to the beach curls…
I’ve been getting lots of compliments (thank you!!!) and questions about my beach curls, which is why I’m writing this post π As with Zoe’s hair in the first photo, my hair creates the “A” frame when it’s long and without layersΒ –> a big sign that it’s willing to curl if given the right opportunity. In humid climates this type of hair is prone to “frizz.” If this sounds like your hair too, then beach curls might work for you!
1. In the photo (above) you can see that my hair has a lot of layers, that’s step one. I have just brushed it, and I massaged my scalp. (The massaging part has nothing to do with the curls, I’m just big into sharing π )
2. Next, I use a spray bottle to wet my hair. It doesn’t need to be soaked, just damp all over.
3. Instead of “leave in conditioner” I’ve been using my regular conditioner for forever now. Squeeze about a nickel worth of conditioner into your palm. Rub the conditioner between your hands.
4. Lift your hair from the bottom up, and gently squeeze to apply the conditioner. You can either flip your head over to do this, or lean to the side.
5. Use aΒ diffuser
This step is optional, unless your hair needs it. How do you know your hair needs it? It needs it if you tried just air-drying, and didn’t get enough curl. My hair has a LOT of layers, and doesn’t need diffusing. (I didn’t diffuse it for any of the photos to follow. I just held it up for this photo to show you.)
However, if I’m going out somewhere special, then I will diffuse my hair, to get the mostΒ curls possible.
To diffuse your hair, lift from the bottom up and hold with the air on.
6. The after photos:
This photo I took in my rash guard is kind of a joke π I had done my makeup (for reasons which I will share with you another time) that day, and then I went in the pool with the kids. So I thought it was hilarious that my hair looked good, and my makeup was done, as if that’s how I get ready for the beach or pool. Don’t mind me, I’m a weirdo π

Since some of you will ask, here is a little more info π
- yes, I use this brand of shampoo and conditioner in the shower too. I adore it.
- no, I don’t wash my hair every day. I wash it about every 4 days, and I only condition from the middle of my head down
- yes, the curls work better the day AFTER you wash.
- yes, I have tried “no poo” and no, I wouldn’t recommend it, unless you have short hair (but that’s just based on personal experience, some of my friends love it)

I use no-poo and I love it! But then my hair is super short. I used to shampooing my hair every day because it was super oily when in puberty and teens. I just continued because I liked that squeaky clean feeling. It seemed it was the only way to get any body into my thin fine hair.
Now with no-poo, I only use it once a week or so. I hate the feeling of my hair in the shower, but after blow drying, it has much more body than using shampoo. It is kind of a pain but we shall see how long I stick with it. As I am in my 60’s, I need all the body I can get!!!
I do wish I had any sort of waves, but I am stuck with stick straight hair. π

Love it! I will be using your tips as I have hair perfect for this. Thank you for sharing!

My hair gets really frizzy if I spray it when it’s dry. I use a homemade leave-in conditioner spray, which works when I’ve just washed my hair. I’ll have to give my regular conditioner a try. Thanks for sharing.

Are you willing to share the recipe for that Donna?

I often soak my hair between washes to get it to curl/wave again nicely, but it only waves a bit. So I tried this as directed, and it did help my hair curl more (it’s naturally wavy/curly). My hair however, did not sit in nice pieces of waved hair like yours, Kelly. It was all little bits of wavy hair that were only ~20 hairs thick. Any tips?
