When I think back on all the places that we’ve stayed on vacation through the years, there are only one or two hotels that I can still picture. Countless others left no memory. I remember the cities and sightseeing with my family, but not the hotel. Lake Placid’s Whiteface Lodge, on the other hand, is completely unforgettable. If I spent all day writing this post I could barely scratch the surface of the magnificence of this resort.
First things first, soaking in one of the 3 hot tubs. I didn’t swim in the pools, but I did stick my toe in so I could tell you: They’re heated, not ice water. 🙂
The Whiteface Lodge was built in the rugged Adirondack style. The attention to detail everywhere you look is astounding. Even the doorstops are custom wooden knobs! The ceilings soar with wooden beams, and all the windows are the nicest I’ve even seen. Not pictured in these room photos are all the doors. They are a thing of beauty. Big heavy lightly stained wood doors with strong rustic handles.
The bathroom was paneled in lovely stained wainscoting, with granite countertops, a pretty woven shower curtain in a charming woodsy red with gold pinecones, and a jet tub big enough to live in. There was even a closet in the bathroom with a washer/dryer.
The living area, as with all of the rooms at Whiteface Lodge really framed the beauty outside, drawing it in. You really feel a part of the Adirondacks here. Curled up by the fire or out on the comfy oversized porch were my favorite places to be.
On the other side of this spacious table is the room’s FULL kitchen. There is a fridge, freezer, dishwasher, OVEN, and stovetop. You can really cook here. I used the oven to bake some gluten-free egg rolls that we picked up in the gluten-free freezer section at the Hannaford just down the street. You could bake muffins, birthday cake, pizza, anything! The kitchen sink is beautiful stone, as is the backsplash. See more of the kitchen here.
And since we’re on the subject of food, dinner at the lodge’s restaurant Kanu was dee-lish. Because we asked for the gluten-free menu, they brought us a basket of warm gluten-free bread with olive oil and balsamic. To start we ordered the eggs, softly cooked in cast iron with a side of tomato jam. The eggs were perfectly done, and the jam was just right, not too sweet.
For dinner I had halibut in beurre blanc to make it gluten-free, with a whole cooked bok choy, and roasted cashews. The halibut was surprisingly crispy on the outside. Inside it was moist and flakey. It was completely excellent, and I loved it with the roasted cashews and bok choy. What a pretty presentation too.
The sun was setting as we enjoyed dinner, giving us this amazing warm glow through the dining room across from us.
As we left Kanu (“canoe,” get it?) I had to stop and take a picture this stairway with stunning chandelier. You could spend all day appreciating the various light fixtures at Whiteface Lodge (among other aspects of their epic woodland decor). The acorn bar lights were another that stand out in my mind.
I love the shades of blue that the mountains appear to be in certain light, like twilight. After dinner I had to snap this photo of mr handsome, taking in the view from the outdoor patio.
We had this for breakfast on the same patio the following morning. The buffet is included with your room, and we added a gluten-free waffle to share. There was so much veg in the scramble. Two thumbs up. And all you can eat bacon. Yes please.
Just a 15 minute drive from the lodge are the breathtaking High Falls Gorge. I took pictures, did some Snapping, and then I put my phone away and just starred in awe. We stayed a long time, walking from fall to fall, and decided this was our favorite.
On the way back to the lodge we pulled off onto one of the hiking areas and took a little hike. The river was like a mirror, and the green all around was heavenly.
Obligatory getaway-with-the-hubbs selfie as we headed to the private Whiteface Lodge beach on Lake Placid. I’m wearing my organic Araza makeup with sun protection, of course 🙂
Like the lodge, it’s really hard to know where to begin describing their private beach situation. Lets start with WOW. Wow, it was stunning. From the beautiful bar-height tables and chairs, to the high quality lounge chairs on the beach, I felt so pampered. And like the lodge there was no shortage of things to do. Basketball, badmitin, and a boathouse full of toys, like complementary canoes, paddle boats and paddle boards. We cruised around, pining over the lake houses from our very own covered paddle boat. I know, we’re adorable. 😉
This cute family was paddle boarding at the same time.
After some basketball we had drinks and thought how grateful we were for Gramma Patti who was babysitting so we could have this getaway. Although if I had realized that Whiteface Lodge has its OWN bowling, movie theater, game room, and countless camps for kids, then we would have brought them along!
I want to thank Whiteface Lodge so much for having us on this unforgettable experience!
♥, Kelly

Hi Kelly!
The turbulence and the panic attacks are real – and if there is another way of escaping it – driving the rest of the way home – it is not chicken to admit and allow your body to recover! I am pleased that you got home safely!
Your getaway was lovely and I am pleased that you’re really able to ‘squeeze’ such an event Into your time away! We used to spend weekends around there while we lived in Montreal! The countryside is amazing – especially in summer! In Winter it is still amazing but requires a different constitution to withstand the lower temps!
Now that you are home – it is time for a new school year! Etc! Good luck to the girls and to you two as you guide them through it all!
Thanks for telling your story!
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Richardson

Thanks you so much for sharing your very personal flight experience. I have struggled years with this. I take Xanax and bonine for the motion sickness. I’m a natural approach person like you but all of my anxiety is in my head so I feel like no natural approach will help me so I take these things. I don’t get hard on myself for it. I do what I need to in order to travel by air which I HATE. Even with the Xanax and bonine I still feel anxious. I feel soooo bad for you that that happened to you. It’s my fear that will be me one day. Thank you for sharing your story.

Sounds like a lovely spot! I’m putting it on my long list….
I totally understand the flying anxiety. I’m much better than I use to be but still not great. I once screamed on a plane we are crashing. My father-in-law (also a pilot) commented after how well the pilot handled the landing in the alps. I shook for thirty minutes after landing. Always take care of yourself! ?
