I don’t know what it is this summer, but I’ve been battling such dry skin, especially my hands and feet. Also my feet and legs twitch at night if I haven’t had enough magnesium. I decided the remedy for both of these issues was a homemade magnesium body butter! So I whipped up this Mint White Chocolate Body Butter with Magnesium! It’s really easy to do, and I have loads of tips for you on making your own!
About the Ingredients:
Cacao Butter: Cacao butter or white chocolate is delicious in recipes, like my popular dairy-free White Chocolate Pie and Cookies, and it’s also excellent in skin products. Used in skin cream, cacao butter not only smells lovely, it also helps prevent stretch marks, is super popular during pregnancy, and is very healing and moisturizing.
Beeswax: The thing about homemade body butters is that they melt if it’s not winter. To keep them stable when it’s warm in your house you have to add a little cosmetic beeswax. Lots of natural non-toxic companies add this to their creams and body butters too. If you’re making body butter in the winter, and you want to leave it out, you can. But definitely not in summer 🙂
Magnesium: Most people are deficient in magnesium. This can cause constipation, headaches, anxiety, muscle and joint pain, trouble sleeping, leg cramps, muscle spasms, and more. We take epsom salt baths (even just foot baths are helpful) as often as possible, and we take magnesium supplements every night. The cream recipe below also includes a liquid magnesium which can be used right on the skin.
Essential Oils: Essential oils are applied to the skin with a carrier oil, like coconut or avocado oil. Likewise, you can put essential oils in body butter and creams, which are also made of oils. Essential oils are grounding, provide a sense of well-being, and can help you relax, among other therapeutic properties. You can use any essential oils that you like, I’ve used a blend of wintergreen, clove, and peppermint oils here.
Mint White Chocolate Body Butter with Magnesium
1 cup (115 grams) chopped cacao butter, or about 1/2 cup liquified
1/2 cup liquified coconut oil
1 tablespoon liquid magnesium
about 2 tablespoons melted cosmetic beeswax (30 grams)
wintergreen or peppermint essential oil blend, as desired
- Add the liquified cacao butter and liquified coconut oil to the bowl of your stand mixer. Refrigerate until solid through, about 45 minutes. If you leave it in the fridge too long, and the oils harder beyond the consistency of cold butter, then let the bowl sit on the counter to soften.
- Attach the bowl to the stand mixer and whip the oils to stiff peaks, about 3 minutes. Add the magnesium and whip again to combine.
- Melt the beeswax and add it very slowly, while the mixer is on. If the oils liquify again don’t worry, just put the bowl back in the refrigerator for 20 minutes or until firm as butter again.
- Continue whipping until the mixture looks like shortening (about 2 minutes), then add your essential oils, to the desired amount.
- Transfer to 4 ounce colored glass jars with lids and enjoy!
Makes 3 (4 ounce) jars
Notes:
All creams and body butters (homemade or not) are best absorbed on damp skin.
Homemade creams may have imperfections, like a few grains of oil or wax, but that’s okay 🙂
Making creams and body butters is a fun activity to do with friends.
Homemade creams make great gifts!
