Happy Fall! I have a really fun and easy DIY Upcycled Fall Art piece for you! Inspired by the pieces above and below (which I found on Pinterest) I decided to create an upcycled fall art piece of my own. 🙂 I wanted to:
- Use a picture frame that I already had OR that I found at the thrift store
- Upcycle this framed print by removing the print and turning the piece into a chalkboard
- Add a wreath that I created with asymmetrical fall flowers
- Add hand-lettering in chalk
So taking the asymmetrical wreath concept from Etsy and adding it to the chalkboard concept from Golden Boys & Me, I found an old framed print in my garage to use as the background. If you don’t have an old framed print to upclycle, you can find one at the thrift store, which is where I got mine in the first place 😂
I’ve heard that you can paint with chalkboard paint on glass, but I wanted to remove my glass to make the piece lighter weight. I have painted on the hard backs that come with framed prints before, but this one was missing a back, and had only cardboard. So after I removed the glass and the print I cut a piece of quarter inch plywood to the size of the glass, to put it in the frame. After 2 coats of chalkboard paint from Lowes I added it to the frame.
Using the JoAnne’s app I got this bare wreath for 60% off. I got two orange artificial flowers (one large, one small), and one piece of greenery, also greatly discounted. I cut shorter pieces with wire cutters, and after I had my asymmetrical design arranged, I secured it with hot glue.
The texture of the painted plywood isn’t the smoothest, but I don’t mind at all. 🙂
The last step was to do the chalk hand-lettering. I always start by lightly covering a newly painted chalkboard in chalk, then wiping it off. It gives the chalkboard a cozy used look.
Finally, I lightly wrote “happy pumpkin season”, erasing letters and trying them over again, until it looked how I wanted it to. Then I made the lines heavier and complete. I looked on MyFonts.com to get ideas. It’s nice because you can type the quote you want to write and it will show you how it looks in any font.
I’m really excited with how it came out! And I love that I was able to repurpose the frame 🙂 After Thanksgiving I’m going to replace this wreath with a Christmas wreath and write a new message in chalk.
